Working with Music Production Software

Arts and Entertainment Comments Off

When big name producers like Jim Jonsin, Timbaland, and DJ Premier say that it’s easier than ever to create hit music, they’re saying that because access to quality professional tools has never been more widespread. Most aspiring producers will find that music production software is the easiest, most accessible tool for making quality hit music. Here’s a few quick pointers for working with music production software.

First, know whether music production is the course for you. You’ll need to start out with something that fits your budget in the beginning so you can test the waters and discover whether you have a knack or a talent, and whether you derive any enjoyment from producing music. The main thing starting out is whether you enjoy music production, because if you do, then you can stick with it, and with practice even if you’re challenged in the beginning, you can become good at it.

To that end, a solid free music production software to start out with is Audacity, or alternately Magix Music Maker. While these programs may not be the most comprehensive or flexible, they’re still good enough for you to follow some solid music production tutorials and take a free set of loops (many companies such as ModernBeats offer some loops for free), and discover whether you enjoy creating urban, Hip Hop, or R&B music.

If you’ve discovered you have a knack or a love for making music with music production software, then your second step is to find a host software (software to arrange and mix) that suits your style of workflow. If you’re fond of working with loops, then Ableton Live and Fruity Loops are excellent choices. If, on the other hand, you’re more into recording a song track by track, using instruments, then  you’re better off looking into Logic, Steinberg Cubase, Cakewalk Sonar, or Adobe Audition. That just covers your host software.

A third step is to find out what effect software you want to use. The various bundles produced by Waves plugins are all very useful, but there are several free options as well. There are usually inexpensive versions of every full-suite software. Once you’re using the best music production software for your style, then your next step is to learn how to make quality recordings for vocals and instruments. But that’s another story.

Learn To Make A Paper Gun

How to Make a Paper Gun

At one point or another every little boy wants a toy gun to play with; parents are sometimes doubtful about getting one as they fear it will cause harm to their children or to other children and this is a fairly authentic worry. So what is the solution to this problem? A paper gun.

A paper gun is a very quick and simple task that you can teach your children to build to pass a bit of time. You can all sit down and make paper guns together if you wish and play a game of police and thieves or Indians, or anything else you wish – either way it can provide a few hours of safe fun therefore here are some tips on making a ‘cocking’ handgun.

Required Tool

Your hands

Required Material

Paper

Instructions

To make the cocking paper handgun, get a sheet of letter-size paper and fold it in half lengthwise, fold it in half again, and yet another time. So it must be folded 3 times in all. Then take a second sheet of paper and fold it in the same way, the same amount of times.

Take one of the folded sheets and fold it in half widthwise; this piece will serve as the barrel of your paper gun. Take the second sheet of paper and fold a 90-degree angle in either end of it to make a U shape, leaving about 4 inches of paper across the middle part area.

With the 90-degree angle folds still in place, fold the paper in half so that both 90-degree angle folds join together and are aligned. The paper must have an L shape if this step is done correctly.

Next take the ‘barrel’ sheet of paper and slide it around the 90-degree folds, into the pockets that have been created in them. Pull the barrel back and slide it forward to cock the gun and you are done.

If you want a more realistic paper gun or various sorts of paper guns such as an Uzi or Berretta, there are quite a few picture and video tutorials on the internet and templates that you can download and cut out and glue together to make a more real-looking gun.

Tips and Warnings

The shooting paper guns are fairly harmless because shooting it requires blowing into the barrel or using a paper roll to push the ‘bullet’ out the barrel which is not generally forceful enough to cause harm, so you do not have to worry about safety problems with a paper gun.

If the gun design is not quite to your liking, you can modify it to suit your tastes. You now know the fundamental idea behind making a paper gun so modify it as you please to build a satisfactory paper gun.

Color or decorate the paper gun to make it more lifelike or appropriate to your liking.

If you do not have letter-size paper any paper will do; just remember that the size of the gun will be dependent on the size of the paper.

Most Unnecessary Terms in the English Language

Arts and Entertainment Comments Off

English is much more specific than other languages. Many languages don’t bother to specify with things like “the,” “that,” “it,” etc. For example in Chinese, the direct translation of “give me the remote” would be “give me remote” or “give remote.” It may seem strange to us that some languages can work without always specifying gender or time, or using the appropriate article, but it surprisingly works – thanks to the context in which the sentence is spoken.

As a result of our specificity, English speakers can become context ignorant and often over specify particular words and phrases. It’s this reason that excited sports announcers make astute observations like “the crowd is standing on their feet!!!” WTF else would they stand on?!?!

Announcers need to occupy airtime, so I will cut them a break when they over-contextualize; however, there are multiple commonly used terms (particularly by old people) that are completely unneeded! Here is a list of the most unnecessary:

Drinking Water

Having been to Cambodia, I realize that there is some water you may not want to drink… However, “drinking water” is an English word… I am not aware of any country where the primary language is English (maybe in the Caribbean?) that people distinguish between the water they drink and the water they use to hydrate their plants! It’s $##@ing water!

Drinking Straw

This is something that should be able to be solved with just a little context… I can think of two types of straws: “Drinking straws” and hay. I don’t believe I have ever had a conversation that would confuse the two. In fact, the only situation I can even think of where there might be any degree of confusion between the two would be if you were holding a handful of “drinking straws” while looking at a pile of hay and were told to put the straw in the bucket. I’m not sure how many times that one has ever happened…

Seeing Glasses

Included with this: reading glasses and eyeglasses. Again, context people! Why the hell do people insist on specifying between something we drink out of and something we wear on our face? Conflict would only arise when someone has multiple “drinking glasses” (which is also unnecessary) sitting next to their “seeing glasses” and they ask someone to pass their glasses!

Chewing Gum

Perhaps indistinguishable when someone says, “the gum in my mouth?” Is he referring to the “chewing gum” in his mouth or his top gum? Or perhaps this term is used because of panic that might result at an airport security check if someone asked, “Did get your gum?” if it were possibly confused with the word “gun.” For all other possible situations, it is gum!

Walking Shoes

Though you can run in any shoes, running shoes have additional ankle support, padding, etc. And realize that so-called “walking shoes” may have more padding than a pair of heels; however, aren’t all shoes made for walking? Maybe this is less of a context issue for me more the fact that a new word needs to be invented to describe them. No…  It’s that ignorant people say things like “let go put on my walking shoes (or even tennis shoes for that matter).”  Why can’t you just say shoes? Unless you have hover-shoes, I’m going to assume you will use them for walking!

Shopping Bag

What makes a bag a “shopping bag?” When does it make this transformation? If you carried a normal bag into a mall would it become a “shopping bag?” Or do you need to buy something first? If you put trash in your “shopping bag” is it still a “shopping bag” or has it become a trash bag? My head hurts… can someone please explain?

What Are Different Types of Knitting Stitches?

Arts and Entertainment Comments Off

Knitting stitches

Knitting is an art whereby thread or yarn is turned into fabric through a process which entails pulling loops through each other. The process may be done using hand or machine and there are various styles and methods to use. Different types of yarns and needles can be used to create different outcomes.

There are two kinds of knitting: weft knitting and warp knitting. Weft knitting is done by hand or machines while warp knitting is done by machines only. Knitting can be done using a variety of stitches. The key knitting stitches are knit stitch, purl stitch, knit 2 together, yarn-over and stockinette stitch.

Knit stitch – this is created by interweaving loops with each other consecutively. One needle is used to pull a loop of yarn through a stitch on the next needle.

Purl stitch – the yarn is held to the front of your knitting and the right needle is pushed from back to front into the first stitch on the left needle. Use the right index finger to wrap the yarn around and down the right needle in a counterclockwise direction. Draw the right needle with the yarn through the old stitch backward and release the old stitch to form the purl stitch.

Knit 2 together – as the name indicates, this is knitting two together. The right needle is pushed into the second stitch off the tip of the left needle ensuring that the first stitch is caught with it. Take the yarn over and upward then downward. Catch the yarn then slip the old stitches off.

Yarn-over – after a knit stitch, bring the yarn across the knitting from the back toward the front then knit the next stitch. The extra stitch that is created on the row is called a yarn-over.

Stockinette stitch – this is the most popular knitting stitch which consists of knitting one row and purling the next. This is a simple procedure that is perfect for those who are just learning to knit.
