Start Slowly

Even if you think you know certain chords and rhythm, start with the basics. Learn the easy chords before attempting to challenge yourself. Begin with G, D A and E. Practice switching between these chords and master them first.

No Pain No Gain?

When learning acoustic guitar you may develop painful fingers and even blisters. One way to avoid this is to limit your practice sessions until the calluses develop. Try to keep a looser grip on the strings. You may try applying methyl alcohol to your fingers before playing.

Keep Your Chin Up

Try not to look at your hands so much. This will allow your ears to let you know if you are playing the correct chords. You may find you learn a lot faster when using the ear instead of the eye, although using an instructional DVD will be helpful as well. You can play along and watch the instructor as you strum along.

Visualize

Use your mind to direct your hands and see the chords and proper positioning. Soon it will become second nature, and before you know it you will not need to put any thought into playing. This is a great exercise when learning acoustic guitar. Visually focus on each chord before moving on to the next.

Use Every Avenue Of Learning

Along with instructional DVDs, get some reference books and study the chords on paper. Sign up for lessons, either traditional or online. The Internet has a lot to offer, and there are scores of free instructional video clips available. If you are able to, purchase a full learning course.

Learning acoustic guitar will be an experience that will last a lifetime, so by learning proper technique and mastering correct finger placements from the beginning, your learning experience will be enjoyable.

Don’t Give Up Too Easily

There will be days when you feel it is too hard or it isn’t worth the effort. It is! Something must have prompted you to pick up a guitar. If you feel frustrated, put it aside for a day and then return to your practice sessions. Make it a fun time. You’ll be glad you did.
